Growing and Becoming

The CBC Graphic Novel Committee presents our third San Diego Comic-Con 2023 panel: Growing and Becoming.

This panel focuses on protagonists’ coming-of-age experiences, including grappling with family dynamics, identity and mental health, border community life, tween and teen milestone moments, and body image, offering readers opportunities to see themselves or gain insights into others’ experiences. There are many challenges growing up and the panelists themselves revealed much about their lives and struggles in writing their graphic novels. So, if you want to hear all about what inspired In Limbo, A First Time for Everything, Hungry Ghost, and Twin Cities, come hear these book creators share their tales of growing and becoming.

Moderator:

  • Tina Lerno – Digital Content Librarian and Comics Specialist, Los Angeles Public Library

Panelists:

  • Deb JJ Lee (In Limbo) – Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group / First Second
  • Jose Pimienta (Twin Cities) – Scholastic / Graphix
  • Dan Santat (A First Time for Everything) – Scholastic / Graphix
