CBC Diversity Panel: “Recruiting Diversity”

The publishing industry has come under fire for its lack of diversity, with recent surveys by Publishers Weekly and Lee & Low Books revealing a mostly homogeneous workforce. Led by moderator Andrea Davis Pinkney, Vice President, Executive Editor, Scholastic Trade, a panel of Human Resource experts reflected on the current state of diversity hiring and offered strategies for both recruiting and retaining diverse talent.

Seeking out and hiring diverse candidates is critical at all levels, but filling roles of ‘power and authority’ with those from diverse backgrounds is particularly important…Because children’s publishing is in the unique position of ‘having the power and opportunity to influence children all over the world,’ if the employee base doesn’t represent the diversity of the people it serves, ‘we’re missing the mark.’  (Publishers Weekly)
