Libraries for Youth in Prison

A disproportionate number of the teens in correctional facilities are minorities and those labeled “at risk” due to their social and economic disadvantages. In an effort to overcome these obstacles, the Boston Public Library and Brooklyn Public Library, among others, are working to build libraries for youth in prison.

This past spring, the Children’s Book Council partnered with the unPrison Project to build prison-nursery libraries for incarcerated mothers and their babies. Learn more about the inspiring initiative here.

Bringing books to incarcerated youth can lead to many other opportunities for the students to gain skills and improve their chances of leading productive lives when they leave the facility. (School Library Journal)
