Houghton Mifflin Harcourt: Clarion Books | July 24, 2012

This month, Anna Dobbin, Editorial Assistant, introduces us to  Clarion Books!

Clarion Books, an imprint of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, publishes thirty to thirty-five titles per year. Novels and longer nonfiction books  tend to be more literary than commercial, and picture books are known for quirky, colorful artwork and unique, often humorous premises. Clarion also seeks out and publishes a few imports-titles originally published in other countries-every season. The team at Clarion is tight-knit and loyal (e.g. Combined number of years the three editors currently acquiring projects have been at the imprint? More than fifty!).

Clarion is home to a number of bestselling authors: David Wiesner, Eve Bunting, Eileen Christelow, Katherine Paterson, Gary D. Schmidt, Mary Downing Hahn, and Karen Cushman are among the most well-known. Wiesner’s classic Tuesday remains a beloved picture book two decades after its initial publication, and Schmidt’s most recent novel is the hilarious and touching Okay for Now. New author Kate Milford brought her debut, The Boneshaker, to the Clarion list in 2010. Pick this one up – and its prequel, The Broken Lands, out in September – if you’re looking for beautifully written, thrilling historical fiction with a supernatural spin.
