Solving the Puzzle Under the Sea: Marie Tharp Maps the Ocean Floor
As a young scientist in the late 1940s, Marie Tharpe found work at an ocean-studies laboratory. As a woman, she was not allowed on research ships, but could assist on projects. Eventually, she was able to explore a curiosity: What was the shape of the ocean floor? Tharpe carefully plotted ocean-depth data and discovered a remarkable pattern: the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
