A New Monthly CBC Event Series Announced

The new event series, CBC Ed.Talks, for professional development for publishing staff across all departments and coast to coast.

New York, NY (Jan. 13, 2020) – The Children’s Book Council announces a slate of monthly educational events for CBC member publisher staff. The series, to be called CBC Ed.Talks, will be hosted on Zoom once a month and expand the programming created by the Forum and other committees, as well include the CBC Annual Meeting and the CBC Diversity Outstanding Diversity awards panels.

Carl Lennertz, CBC Executive Director, said: “We wanted to have these on the calendar as professional development for publishing staff across all departments and coast to coast. We know everyone is on Zoom overload, but we hope children’s publishing professionals will see these monthly events as something to be enjoyed over lunch or coffee. Additionally, including the Annual Meeting and the Diversity awards panel as part of this organized series for the year will increase the already growing participation for those cornerstone CBC events.”

Shaina Birkhead, CBC Associate Executive Director, added: “The How to Speak Designer event was so fun and informative that we wanted to roll it out to other departments. There will still be evening ECC events and other virtual get-togethers by committees, but CBC Ed.Talks will let everyone set aside time in busy schedules for these ongoing dialogues. We hope that people across all departments will listen in and learn about the new challenges of publishing today.”

The series will launch January 28th at noon ET with How to Speak Publicity. The moderator will be Shifa Kapadwala of Scholastic, and the panelists will include Faye Bi of Bloomsbury, Geena El-Haj of Mango Publishing, Morgan Kane of Macmillan, and Jackson Ingram of Andrews McMeel. An email blast will go out to CBC membership on January 15 in order to RSVP.

Complete details on the year’s full slate are still being finalized, but the series will include a Graphic Novel Committee-sponsored program, more How to Speak Department (next is How to Speak Sales), a YA focused program, the CBC Annual Meeting, and Diversity Awards panel. Suggestions for panels later this year and next can be sent to Shaina.Birkhead@cbcbooks.org.
