CBC at New York Comic Con

On Thursday, October 5th, the CBC collaborated with the New York Public Library on New York Comic Con Professional Day. The panel “Girl Power Comics: Middle-Grade Fiction for Girls (and Boys)” featured CBC member artists: Nidhi Chanani (Pashmina), Yehudi Mercado (Sci-Fu), Laura Terry (Graveyard Shakes), Jenni Holm (Babymouse Series, Swing It, Sunny), Mark Siegel (5 Worlds). For the second panel, “Handling Challenges and Bans” the moderator CBC Graphic Novel Committee member and head of Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, Charles Brownstein. “Author Speed-Dating” was mad, but delightfully so; Each creator was allowed four minutes to pitch their work to working librarians and teachers, 20 creators were involved in two separate rooms.

On Friday, I visited exhibiting CBC members. Sales were strong and attendees were excited for author signings and giveaways. After that, I dropped into Artists Alley to thank creators who participated in “Author Speed-Dating” at their tables, like Yuko Ota and Anath Hirsh (Our Cats are More Famous than Us).

Love this Jughead series from Archie!

My biggest nerd moment took place in Artists Alley. When I was at Ron Wimberly’s table purchasing his fantastic graphic novel for myself, Junot Diaz wandered by and the two creators complimented each other! It took all my willpower to remain collected.

Sunday, I visited with pals like Nick Abadzis (Pigs Might Fly) and Joe Quinones (Marvel), enjoyed the energized crowds and found affordable comics by Moebius, the French cartoonist who is at the top of my list. New York Comic Con 2017: A professional and personal success!
