The books in these lists are read and voted on by 12,500 children across the US each year. These Children’s Choices can be counted on as books children really enjoy reading.
Each year, children from Kindergarten – 6th grade in five regions of the United States read newly-published children’s trade books and vote for the ones they like best. These Children’s Choices, selected from hundreds of titles, can be counted on as books children really enjoy reading.
Since 1974, Children’s Choices has been a trusted source of book recommendations used by teachers, booksellers, librarians, parents, caregivers — everyone who wishes to encourage young people to read for pleasure — and children themselves.
The project is co-sponsored by the CBC and the International Literacy Association (ILA).

Each year, publishers submit hundreds of titles to be evaluated and voted on by 12,500 children. Throughout the school year, five review teams across the country work with their local classroom teachers and librarians to incorporate the books into classroom activities. The top titles are announced at the ILA Annual Convention in July. The fully annotated list of Children’s Choices appears in early May on the ILA website.
2020 submissions are closed. If you want to prepare for next year’s submissions you can review the previous 2020 Children’s Choices Submissions Call for eligibility and submission guidelines.
