Children’s Choices

The books in these lists are read and voted on by 12,500 children across the US each year. These Children’s Choices can be counted on as books children really enjoy reading.

Each year, children from Kindergarten – 6th grade in five regions of the United States read newly-published children’s trade books and vote for the ones they like best. These Children’s Choices, selected from hundreds of titles, can be counted on as books children really enjoy reading.

Since 1974, Children’s Choices has been a trusted source of book recommendations used by teachers, booksellers, librarians, parents, caregivers — everyone who wishes to encourage young people to read for pleasure — and children themselves.

The project is co-sponsored by the CBC and the International Literacy Association (ILA).

WINNING TITLES (Annotated Lists)

Visit ILA’s website for previous years’ lists.

Selection Process

Each year, publishers submit hundreds of titles to be evaluated and voted on by 12,500 children. Throughout the school year, five review teams across the country work with their local classroom teachers and librarians to incorporate the books into classroom activities. The top titles are announced at the ILA Annual Convention in July. The fully annotated list of Children’s Choices appears in early May on the ILA website.

Submission Process

2021 Children’s Choices and Young Adults’ Choices submissions are pending while we all learn more about school openings this fall and figure out the logistics for this year. We will notify you as soon as we have more information. 2021 submissions for our other lists are open June 1 – July 2, 2020.
