ALA-CBC Resources

Resources created by the American Library Association/Children’s Book Council Joint Committee for use by educators, librarians, and parents.

Reading Beyond List

For anyone interested in discovering books for children reading at an advanced level, the Reading Beyond lists are the resource for you! Created and periodically updated by the ALA-CBC (American Library Association & Children’s Book Council) Joint Committee, this resource “celebrates the power of books to lift and expand children’s minds, providing reading experiences beyond levels and limits.” – Susan Polos and Janet Wond, 2017/2018 Committee co-chairs

Featuring three categories with 25 titles each, these books were evaluated by the ALA member librarians of the committee and were chosen for their content, quality, and variety of genre and format.

Building a Home Library List

Create a high-quality library for kids at home! Building a Home Library lists provide guidance to parents, grandparents, and others interested in assembling an at-home library for the kids in their care.

Every two years, the ALA-Children’s Book Council (CBC) Joint Committee, with cooperation from ALSC’s Quicklists Consulting Committee, create Building a Home Library book lists. These lists — organized by age groups from 0 to 14 — include under-the-radar gems, multicultural books, and notable new reads. Newer lists focus on more contemporary titles across genres and formats, while lists from 2014 and 2012 also contain tried-and-true classics.
