“Arnie the Doughnut” – A New Musical Based on The Award-Winning Children’s Book

THE NEW YORK MUSICAL THEATRE FESTIVAL PRESENTS

A DELICIOUS NEW MUSICAL – “ARNIE THE DOUGHNUT”

A dunking good time and wHolesome fun for the entire family

New York, NY (May 29, 2012) — ARNIE THE DOUGHNUT, a delicious family musical by the Chicago writing team George Howe and Frances Limoncelli, based on the award-winning children’s book by Laurie Keller, arrives this July as one of ten official selections of the New York Musical Theatre Festival’s 2012 Next Link Project.

Arnie, a lovable chocolate-frosted doughnut with rainbow sprinkles, is the happiest pastry in the bakery when he’s taken home by his new owner. But when mild-mannered Mr. Bing tries to eat the unsuspecting Arnie, both are in for the surprise of their lives! This unexpectedly original new musical offers something for both adults and kids to enjoy, as Arnie sets out on a hilarious quest to redefine human/doughnut relations.

Tom Deckman (Spamalot, Good Vibrations, South Pacific, It Should Have Been You) heads the cast as the loveable but confused Arnie, Thomas Poarch (One Life To Live; As The World Turns; All My Children, Victor/Victoria, Terms of Dismemberment) as Mr. Bing,Jane Blass (National Tours of 9 to 5: The Musical and Hairspray) is Ms. Plute and a saucy French Cruller, Stephanie Fittro (Legally Blonde, National Tours of Hairspray and Carousel) is the Jelly Doughnut and Sheila, and Jennifer Wren (2011 NY Int. Fringe Festival’s The Bobbed-Haired Bandit, National Tours of A Christmas Carol, The Lion, The Witch & the Wardrobe),  as the Powdered Doughnut and Ronnie.

Keller’s book was first published in 2003 by Henry Holt Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group, and was selected “Best Children’s Book” by Publisher’s Weekly. It has since received numerous honors and high praise from the New York Times, Chicago Tribune and other noted publications around the country.

Parents and children can easily relate to this story with its loveable cast of characters that run the gamut from a slightly snobby French Cruller, to the feminine yet insecure Powdered Doughnut. The play is a perfect length for children as young as 3-years of age, who no doubt will fall in love with the loveable, colorfully festooned ARNIE and his friends.

ARNIE is a fun-filled good read that the duo Howe and Limoncelli have turned into a memorable, high-energy good time being directed by Adam Arian. Critics dubbed the play simply “delicious” and “a sweet indulgence” when it premiered at Chicago’s Lifeline Theatre and became an instant hit with audiences both young and old.
