Juneteenth: Freedom Day

Every year, the CBC highlights a beautiful new book about Juneteenth. The book we are featuring this year is Sourcebook’s The Juneteenth Alphabet, a celebratory picture book of joy and inspiration about the origins and traditions of this day of freedom.

The Juneteenth Alphabet, by Andrea Underwood Petifer; illus. by Ana Latese (Sourcebooks / duopress) — Nonfiction, Picture Book, BIPOC Characters and Creators, Cultural Diversity, Holidays / Seasons / Celebrations, History, Facts / Trivia, ages 4-6.

The CBC is also pleased to offer a full list of wonderful new and backlist books—which can be downloaded as a spreadsheet—that highlights the importance and joy of Juneteenth in many ways.

Another way to honor and celebrate this special day is to watch Crystal Allen’s reading of Floyd Cooper’s Juneteenth for Mazie and a special reenactment of the reading of General Order 3, sponsored by the Children’s Book Council.

To learn more about the Juneteenth flag, read Capital B’s interview with the creator and check out the Skokie Public Library’s downloadable info sheet and coloring page!
