Watch the 67th Annual National Book Awards Live on Twitter and Facebook

New York, NY (November 4, 2016) — Building on the success of last year’s livestream of the National Book Awards Ceremony and the excitement around this year’s first Finalist announcement on Facebook Live with the New Yorker, the National Book Foundation will be broadcasting the 67th National Book Awards Ceremony live on Facebook, Twitter, and at nationalbook.org. The livestream of the ceremony begins at 7:40 pm EST.

“All year long, we’ve talked about how important it is for the Foundation to help build a nation of readers,” said Lisa Lucas, Executive Director of the National Book Foundation. “Ensuring that an invitation to participate in the magic of the National Book Awards, live and in real time, is available to anyone, anywhere, with an interest and an internet connection is deeply important to us.”

A Way for Viewers to Participate

Those following along as the National Book Awards are announced are invited to guess this year’s winners and see where they line up on the night of the ceremony through a ballot, which is now available online at nationalbook.orgnationalbook.org While seats for the invitation-only event are limited, last year’s livestream had an audience of over 10,000, and this year’s Finalists Announcement on Facebook Live reached nearly 60,000. This year’s ceremony, the culmination of a weeklong celebration of writers and reading, is expected to draw many more viewers.

National Book Award week festivities begin on November 14 with 5 Under 35, the Foundation’s invitation-only celebration of emerging fiction writers selected by authors previously honored by the National Book Foundation. On the morning of November 15, the National Book Awards Teen Press Conference will take place at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. On the evening of November 15, all 22 Finalists will read from their book at the National Book Awards Finalists Reading at The New School. The Finalists Reading is open to the public; tickets are $10 and are available at the New School:

The National Book Foundation‘s mission is to celebrate the best of American literature, to expand its audience, and to enhance the cultural value of good writing in America.

The National Book Award is one of the nation’s most prestigious literary prizes and has a stellar record of identifying and rewarding quality writing. In 1950, William Carlos Williams was the first Winner in Poetry, the following year William Faulkner was honored in Fiction, and so on through the years. Many previous Winners of a National Book Award are now firmly established in the canon of American literature, such as Sherman Alexie, Louise Erdrich, Jonathan Franzen, Denis Johnson, Phil Klay, James McBride, Joyce Carol Oates, Adrienne Rich, and Jesmyn Ward.
