Candlewick Press and Boston Harbor Cruises Partner to Promote Literacy and Marine-Life Education

BOSTON, MA — Candlewick Press announced today that it will partner with Boston Harbor Cruises to expand the idea of the “beach read” by adding high-quality children’s books to the whale-watching experience.

As part of Candlewick and Boston Harbor Cruises’ (BHC) collaboration, a library of ocean-themed titles, selected with an eye to fostering a love of reading and to supporting marine life conservation through education, has been installed in one of Boston Harbor Cruises’ New England Aquarium Whale Watch catamarans, with similar libraries planned for the remaining vessels.

Candlewick and BHC celebrated the new partnership on Saturday, July 23, with a presentation aboard a whale watch by local author Vita Murrow and illustrator Ethan Murrow, creators of The Whale , an epic wordless picture book published by Candlewick this spring. As real-life whale watchers cruised toward Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, the Murrows discussed the book, wherein two intrepid, fictional young whale watchers pursue a legendary Great Spotted Whale.

Alongside The Whale , the floating library will include such fiction and nonfiction titles as Big Blue Whale by Nicola Davies, illustrated by Nick Maland; Slickety Quick: Poems about Sharks , by Skila Brown, illustrated by Bob Kolar; and In the Sea by David Elliott, illustrated by Holly Meade.

“We think a mini library of children’s books featuring ocean-related topics is a great addition to and a perfect fit for our whale watch vessels. The books give children a creative way to further explore the ocean’s wonders while they’re onboard. It’s also a great way for us to strengthen our community ties and partner with Candlewick Press, a fellow Massachusetts business, to make the visitor experience to Boston even better,” said Alison Nolan, partner, Boston Harbor Cruises.

“We hope this partnership will excite guests of Boston Harbor Cruises by providing them with compelling and educational reading material on their journey to and from the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. By putting these books in front of whale watchers, we hope to cultivate a deeper understanding of and respect for marine life while also encouraging a love of reading,” said Ally Russell, consumer outreach specialist at Candlewick Press.
