Temple Grandin to Publish Children’s Book About Invention and Innovation With Penguin Young Readers

New York, NY – September 13, 2016 – Temple Grandin, master innovator and author of the New York Times bestselling memoir Animals in Translation, will publish a hands-on, fun-filled, thought-provoking children’s book about invention and innovation with Philomel Books, an imprint of Penguin Young Readers. Aimed at readers ages 8-12, Calling All Brains will feature more than 20 of Grandin’s personal childhood projects that started her on her road to becoming a scientist, inventor and engineer. With mini-histories of groundbreaking inventions and mini-biographies of the inventors who created them, Temple will show readers why, in a world of virtual learning, working with your hands is a life-changing experience. The deal for North American rights was brokered by Betsy Lerner at Dunow, Carlson & Lerner and Jill Santopolo, Editorial Director, Philomel Books, who will edit. Calling All Brains is scheduled for publication in 2018.

Temple Grandin has dedicated her life to educating people about autism, to improving the welfare of animals, and to creating inventions that improve the quality of life for both humans and animals, including the much-touted “Hug Machine,” which are now used world-wide. Half the cattle in the U.S. and Canada are handled in equipment she has designed for meat plants, and she has developed animal welfare guidelines for the meat industry. Dr. Grandin is currently a professor of animal sciences at Colorado State University where she continues her research while teaching courses on livestock handling and facility design. Her life was made into an Emmy-award winning HBO movie starring Claire Danes based on her memoir, Thinking in Pictures. Her books have collectively sold over a million copies worldwide, and two of them have been New York Times bestsellers. She has won many awards for her work, and most recently has been inducted into the Academy of Arts and Science.
