Ellen Hopkins Lands Two-Book Deal

November 08, 2012

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ELLEN HOPKINS, AUTHOR OF NINE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERS, SIGNS A TWO-BOOK DEAL

WITH SIMON & SCHUSTER CHILDREN’S PUBLISHING

NEW YORK, November 8, 2012– Ellen Hopkins, the author of nine New York Times bestselling young adult novels, includingCrank, Burned, Impulse, Glass, Identical, Tricks, Fallout, Perfect, and most recently, Tilt, has signed for two additional young adult novels with Margaret K. McElderry Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing.

With over four million books in print and many of her books reaching #1 on The New York Times bestseller list, Hopkins’s award-winning novels have garnered critical review attention. From drug addiction to domestic abuse to perfectionism to teen prostitution, Hopkins is well known for her no-holds-barred approach to tackling tough issues facing today’s teens. These two new titles will continue to deal with teens in crisis and will be written in Hopkins’s signature verse style.

In Rumble, the first of the two titles, eighteen-year-old Matthew Turner doesn’t believe in much. Not in family—his is a shambles, after his brother’s suicide. Not in so-called friends who turn their backs when the going gets rough. Certainly not in some omnipotent master of heaven and earth, no matter what his girlfriend, Hayden, thinks. In fact, he’s sick of arguing with her about faith. Matt is a devout atheist, unafraid of some Judgment Day designed by decidedly human power brokers to keep the masses in check. He works hard, plays hard, and plans on checking out the same way. But a horrific accident—one of his own making—plunges Matt into a dark, silent place where the only thing he can hear is a rumble, and eventually, a voice. And what it says will call everything Matt has ever disbelieved into question.

“I’m truly excited to bring my readers two more books,” says Ellen Hopkins. “They can count on some surprises as I explore new territories and stretch myself as an author. That wouldn’t be possible without the wholehearted support of Simon & Schuster, who is more than a partner and publisher. S & S has championed my vision from the beginning, and for that I’m forever grateful.”

The deal, which is for world rights in all languages, was negotiated by Justin Chanda, Vice President & Publisher of Margaret K. McElderry Books, and Laura Rennert of Andrea Brown Literary Agency, Inc.

“Ellen Hopkins has such a profound impact on readers and is a master at capturing the voice of today’s teen,” said Justin Chanda. “We are thrilled to be adding two more powerfully evocative and incredibly pertinent novels to Ellen’s already stellar work on the McElderry Books list.”

Ellen Hopkins will be honored by The National Coalition Against Censorship (NCAC) for her fight to defend free speech during NCAC’s annual Free Speech Matters ceremony in New York City on November 12. Hopkins’s next young adult novel, Smoke, which is the sequel to the bestselling Burned, hits stores in September 2013.

Ellen Hopkins is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of CrankBurned, Impulse, Glass, Identical, Tricks, Fallout, Perfect, and Tilt, as well as the adult novels Triangles and Collateral published by Atria. Ellen continues to get hundreds of e-mails and notes through social media from teenagers across the country each day, who claim that she is “the only one who understands them.”  She lives with her family in Carson City, Nevada.
