CBC Diversity Lines Up Heavy-Hitters for "'It's Complicated' -- Book Covers" Blog Dialogue

August 30, 2012

Every day from September 3-7, a different kid lit industry insider will contribute a blog post addressing diversity in book covers at CBCDiversity.com.

CBC Diversity is dedicated to increasing the diversity of voices and experiences contributing to children's and young adult literature -- encouraging diversity of race, gender, geographical origin, sexual orientation, and class among both the creators of and the topics addressed by kid lit.

As part of this ongoing effort, we're pleased to present the second dialogue in the "It's Complicated!" blog series September 3-7, this time addressing covers. The following voices in the industry will each contribute one blog post to the series over the week, addressing challenges they've faced and successes they've had in selling/designing/writing books portraying diverse characters on the cover, and participating in the open dialogue in the comments section of the site:

  • Coe Booth, Author
Laurent Linn, Art Director at Simon & Schuster Children's
Felicia Frazier, Senior VP of Sales at Penguin Young Readers
Elizabeth Bluemle, Owner of Flying Pig Bookstore
Joseph Monti, Agent at Barry Goldblatt Literary - read his recent post about his entry into publishing on CBC Diversity»

  •

There will also be a Lunch-and-Learn wrap-up event for CBC members featuring a panel discussion with the bloggers on September 25. Learn about more benefits of membership>>

CBC Diversity's first "It's Complicated" blog dialogue in May addressed a topic that has arisen frequently at the Diversity table -- the concept of responsibility and authenticity when writing about diverse characters and how authors, editors, and agents can choose/write stories that reflect the diverse nature of our society. Review that conversation»

    Get involved!

We encourage everyone to become a part of the conversation by posting in the comments section of the blog throughout the week. This is an opportunity to become a partner in the effort to represent the diverse nature of our society in both the creators of and topics addressed by children's literature.

Please join us online and post your thoughts all week long!
