Following a state law, the Arizona high school targets the curriculum of the Mexican-American studies program, citing the literature promotes "racial resentment."

On January 1, 2011, Arizona passed a law targeting Mexican-American studies courses that are perceived as anti-white. The decision made it illegal for Tucson schools to teach Matt de la Peña's Mexican WhiteBoy, a young adult novel about a teenage boy who is half Mexican and half white. State officials cited the book as containing “critical race theory,” a violation under a provision that prohibits lessons “promoting racial resentment.”
