'Sesame Street' Promotes School Readiness For All

After the initial cost of a television, the program — which fosters literacy and problem-solving — is a free educational resource. Preschool-aged boys who watched the show regularly were found to have a 16% less chance of falling behind in school. Meanwhile, black and non-Hispanic children were 3.7% less likely to fall behind than other kids.

These findings raise the exciting possibility that TV and electronic media more generally can be leveraged to address income and racial gaps in children’s school readiness. (School Library Journal)
