Reading Lists: Not Just for Children Anymore! 2002

The year 1998 was a milestone in children's book publishing. With the U.S. publication of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, the publishing and bookselling communities experienced a phenomenon never before seen—adults buying and reading a children's book in record numbers. In the five years since Harry Potter arrived, children's books are more popular than ever with adults and the market for children's books continues to increase. The first Not Just for Children Anymore! catalog was published in 1997 to help booksellers increase their market for children's books. The list represents only a small number of the many children's titles appropriate for adults, but these strong selections provide a solid foundation for booksellers to begin expanding their audience for children's books. For bookstore customers, the list offers a sampling of the fun, educational, thought-provoking, and artistic world of children's books available to readers of all ages.

NJFCA! 2002: An Introduction

The year 1997 was a milestone in children's book publishing.

Coincidentally, the first Not Just for Children Anymore! catalog was published in 1997 to help booksellers increase their market for children's books. Four children's book experts chose the 2002 final selections from over three-hundred-fifty books submitted by fifty-six publishers.

The selected titles are grouped into thirteen general categories. Each title is followed by its bibliographic information (for the hardcover edition, unless only the paperback is available) and accompanied by a brief annotation written by a member of the selection committee. For booksellers, these annotations may help generate ideas about in-store promotional displays or provide answers to adult customers' inquiries about appropriate children's books for themselves or their adult friends and family. For customers, the catalog may serve as an introductory guide to the children's book department. Also included in the catalog is a special Classics & Perennial Favorites section for books originally published before 1990. Please see the introduction to the Classics & Perennial Favorites list for more information about this section.
