Children's Choices

An annual project of the CBC and the International Reading Association, the Children’s Choices list is chosen by five teams of children across the country. Since 1975, Children’s Choices has been a trusted source of book recommendations used by teachers, librarians, parents—and children themselves. Submissions to the Children’s Choices program may become finalists in the Children’s Choice Book Awards, the only national child-selected awards program.
Each year, publishers submit hundreds of titles to be evaluated and voted on by over 12,000 children. Throughout the school year, five review teams across the country work with their local classroom teachers and librarians to incorporate the books into classroom activities. The top titles are announced at the IRA Annual Convention in April/May. The fully annotated list of Children's Choices appears in the October issue of the IRA publication The Reading Teacher.
The list is designed for use not only by teachers, librarians, administrators, and booksellers, but also by parents, grandparents, caregivers, and everyone who wishes to encourage young people to read for pleasure.
The current annotated list of Children's Choices is available online at www.reading.org.
Previous years' annotated Children's Choices lists are also available online. Prior to 1998 the lists are only available in The Reading Teacher, which can be obtained through your local or university library.
