July 20, 2016

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Kansas City’s only Medically-Based Children’s Literacy Program will distribute Books Honoring Children with Special Needs

Kansas City, KS – July 19, 2016 – Reach Out and Read Kansas City recently added 13 titles from the “Finding My Way” series to their list of approved books for health-care providers to distribute to young children at well-child visits. The books will be a welcome addition to RORKC’s list as these stories highlight children with special needs or disabilities finding their way to independent and successful futures. The titles include both English and Spanish books.

“Many of our 50 KC area health-care sites have already requested books from this series for their patients,” says Janice Dobbs, RORKC Book Coordinator. “These books offer a positive message of inclusion and we appreciate being able to offer them to our families.”

About Reach Out and Read Kansas City

Reach Out and Read Kansas City is a nonprofit that gives young children a foundation for success by incorporating books into pediatric care and encouraging families to read aloud together. The program works with over 50 greater Kansas City area healthcare clinics to provide 76,000 books to 30,000 predominantly at-risk children and families every year. At participating clinics, children from birth to age five are given a book at each well-child checkup, while doctors and nurses educate parents about early literacy by providing a prescription to read with their children every day.

About Finding My Way Books

Finding My Way Books honors children with special needs or disabilities by sharing their stories. Their books feature photographs of children learning to become independent while doing daily activities. These books are told from the perspective of the child, and are created with the intent to promote inclusion, support families, and encourage skills for self-determination.
