Rare Signed Original Maurice Sendak Sketch To Be Auctioned Off

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New York, NY, May 2, 2013–The American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression announced today that they have acquired a Maurice Sendak original to be sold at the Annual Children’s Book Art Auction on Wednesday, May 29 from 5:30 – 7:30pm in the River Pavilion of the Javits Convention Center in conjunction with BookExpo America. Bestselling authors Jack Gantos and Lauren Myracle will be co-hosting.

The rare Sendak piece, generously donated by The Maurice Sendak Estate, is a signed original sketch, entitled Little Bear.

“We couldn’t be more honored and grateful to The Maurice Sendak Estate for their donation of this rare Sendak piece,” said ABFFE auction manager, Kristen Gilligan Vlahos. “The generosity of donations in general is humbling and impressive. Many of the illustrators will be in attendance, too. This is shaping up to be one fun and special event.”

In addition, a special tribute to the late Maurice Sendak at the BEA auction will feature pieces created by children’s book illustrators in honor of Sendak, who mentored and inspired many artists.

This year, everyone, everywhere will have the opportunity to participate in supporting the free speech rights of young readers, whether at the auction for the publishing industry at BEA or the  online auction open to the public May 18-24. The online auction will feature different works of art than the BEA auction.

Proceeds will support the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression’s defense of the free speech rights of young readers. ABFFE is a co-founder of the Kids’ Right to Read Project (KRRP) and a principal sponsor of Banned Books Week, the only national celebration of the freedom to read.

Tickets to the auction at BEA, which is open to all members of the book industry, are on sale now.

ABFFE’s auction website offers a preview of the growing number of artworks in each auction.
