National Ambassador Gene Luen Yang’s Creativity in Progress Series: Part 3

May 27, 2016

Join National Ambassador for Young People's Literature Gene Luen Yang each month at Panels for the Creativity in Progress series, where he shows us the process behind his comics!

In his third post, Yang discusses some of the different approaches to writing the script for comic books. Unlike in screenwriting, there is no industry-wide format for comic book scripts. Yang follows the Dark Horse Script Format when creating scripts for other artists to execute.

When I’m writing work-for-hire scripts, I generally follow the Dark Horse Script Format Guide. I do this even when I’m not writing for Dark Horse. I break each page into panels, and for each panel I provide a description of the picture, the dialogue, the captions, the thought balloons, and the sound effects. (Panels)
