National Ambassador Gene Luen Yang Shares Holiday Reads

November 29, 2016

National Ambassador for Young People's Literature and acclaimed graphic novelist Gene Luen Yang has been a lifelong fan of comics. Now through his official platform, "Reading Without Walls," he hopes to inspire a new generation to discover the world through books.

Below are five of Yang’s favorite books for the season:
  • The Crossover, by Kwame Alexander (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, ages 10 to 13)
  • Little Night, by Yuyi Morales (Roaring Brook, age 6 and younger)
  • Lowriders in Space, by Cathy Camper and Raul the Third (Chronicle, ages 9 to 12)
  • Meanwhile, by Jason Shiga (Abrams, ages 8 to 12)
  • Mighty Jack, by Ben Hatke (First Second, ages 9 to 12)
We can’t move forward as a species without some sort of respect for diversity. One of the main strengths of books, especially of fiction, is building empathy. To read about people who don’t look like you is a way of building empathy for people who are different from you. (The Washington Post)
