National Ambassador Gene Luen Yang on Superheroes and the Outsider Experience

November 17, 2016

Acclaimed comic book creator, MacArthur fellow, and National Ambassador for Young People's Literature Gene Luen Yang  fell in love with superhero comics at a young age, empowered by the outsider narratives.

As the child of Chinese immigrants, Yang identified with Superman and other costumed heroes navigating multiple cultures. Yang has reinvented the genre for today’s diverse audience through his “New Super-Man” series, which sets the familiar story in China.

If we care about diversity and representation, then the approach we need is two-pronged: We need new characters establishing new legacies, and we also need characters that use a pre-existing legacy to attract eyeballs. (The New York Times Magazine)
