National Ambassador Gene Luen Yang Engages Non-Readers

April 29, 2016

Graphic novelist and National Ambassador for Young People's Literature Gene Luen Yang has more than a few ideas on how to spread the joy of reading to reluctant readers.

A former computer science teacher, Yang believes that technology has the potential to expand literacy. Through his platform, “Reading Without Walls,” he hopes to break down the conventional barriers between genres and forms, granting kids the freedom to choose the stories that inspire them — both in print and on the screen.

Opportunities to tell their own stories are as important as quiet time for kids to become engaged. At the very least…educators and parents must allow kids to make their own choices. (Oakland Magazine)
