This guide is a specialized directory of Children's Book Council (CBC) member publishers' guidelines for reviewing illustrators' artwork. Members were asked to indicate how illustrators might arrange to have their work seen, and to specify what materials they most frequently wish to see.
Online Illustrators' Guide: This list can be browsed via alphabetical links, using the code legend in the left-hand column as reference; also provides links to publisher Web pages where available.
PDF Illustrators' Guide: This list can be viewed using Adobe Acrobat Reader. This is a read-only PDF and provides no links to publisher pages. Download and print this file if you want a clean print version of The Illustrators' Guide to Members of The Children's Book Council. If you do not have Adobe Reader, you can download it free from Adobe.
Members are listed alphabetically. Each listing contains publisher's name, address, general phone number, and when available, website address. Those publishers who are currently accepting artwork submissions have provided a contact name and title, accompanied by telephone number, fax number, and/or email address, when available. This information is followed by a series of letter-and-number codes, which are defined in the Code Legend. The codes allow for a great deal of information in a limited space. They also impose a certain level of uniformity, so artists using this directory should approach the entries as useful general guidelines rather than highly specific or idiosyncratic detailings of publishers' needs. It is important to read the complete listing, including the restrictions, possibilities, limitations, etc. that have been provided by some publishers, before submitting your artwork.
Be sure that any materials left with a publisher are clearly labeled with the illustrator's name, address, and telephone number.
Please note that this list includes all CBC member publishers, even those who are not currently accepting artwork [or manuscript] submissions. General contact information has been provided for these publishers along with the policy statement: Not currently accepting artwork [or manuscript] submissions.
Some abbreviations commonly used throughout this document are: BFYR (Books for Young Readers) and SASE (Self-address Stamped Envelope).
