Yale Publishing Course

July 18, 2010 - July 23, 2010

The inaugural session of the Yale Publishing Course, to be held July 18-23, will focus on "Leadership Strategies in a Time of Transition."

The Yale Course on the University campus is carrying on the mission of the now defunct Stanford Publishing Course to train emerging leaders in the book, magazine, and online publishing industry. Leading publishing executives, including Cynthia Leive, editor-in-chief of Glamour (which just won the American Society of Magazine Editors' Magazine of the Year award for both its print and digital platforms); Chip Kidd, legendary book designer from Knopf; renowned Silicon Valley futurist Paul Saffo; and Jack Griffin, President of the National Media Group, Meredith Corporation, will lead sessions.

In addition, various digital presentations will provide insights on Google's initiatives and the latest innovations in mobile platforms and digital delivery.

The week-long, intensive program at Yale will concentrate on the business of publishing as a global enterprise, with a strong emphasis on understanding and utilizing the latest advances in technology. It will pay particular attention to the need for forward-looking strategies to help publishers maximize their potential in the rapidly accelerating transition to an increasingly digital environment worldwide.

The curriculum, which is geared to mid to upper-level professionals from all over the world, will combine information-packed plenary sessions with smaller, more narrowly-focused seminars geared more specifically to book or magazine publishing. A digital media and international perspective will be infused throughout the curriculum. Specific issues concerning editorial content, design and production, marketing and sales, and business and management will be addressed throughout the week.

The Course will draw upon the resources of the prestigious Yale University Press and members of the Yale faculty. Tina Christenfeld Weiner, who has had a distinguished career in publishing, most recently as Publishing Director at Yale University Press, has been appointed the Director of the Course. Deeply committed to furthering education in the industry, she has taught at the University of Denver Summer Publishing Institute and has lectured frequently at publishing conferences here and abroad. Working with a group of experienced publishing professionals, many of whom were advisors and taught at Stanford, she hopes to make the Yale Publishing Course the preeminent program for the next generation of leaders in the field.
