STORIED CITY: NEW YORK IN PICTURE BOOK ART

OPENS AT THE KATONAH MUSEUM OF ART OCTOBER 2

(Katonah, NY) New York has long held special appeal for the illustrators and writers of children’s books – both as a place to live and as a setting for their stories and art. Storied City: New York in Picture Book Art, curated by historian and critic Leonard Marcus, opens at the Katonah Museum of Art on October 2 and features original art from more than 35 picture books that examine city landmarks, neighborhoods, parks, and modes of transportation. Storied City: New York in Picture Book Art will be on view from October 2 through December 31. The Katonah Museum of Art is located on 134 Jay Street/Route 22 in Katonah, NY. For more information, visit www.katonahmuseum.org or call (914) 232-9555.

“There are so many beloved children’s stories that use New York City as a backdrop,” says Naomi Leiseroff, the Museum’s Learning Center Curator. “When posed with choosing a book to feature in the Learning Center, it was impossible to settle on just one. We saw the potential for a much larger, more comprehensive exhibition.”

Storied City includes works by Caldecott Medal-winning artists Richard Egielski, Mordicai Gerstein, Jerry Pinkney, Brian Selznick, Marc Smont, David Small, and David Wiesner. Additionally, illustrators long associated with The New Yorker Magazine—including Maira Kalman, James McMullan, Roxie Munro, and Edward Sorel—are featured in the exhibition. Storied City is divided into four themes:

  • Big City: From the Empire State Building to Grand Central Terminal, New York City is home to many of the world’s most recognizable landmarks. See how iconic buildings are immortalized and reimagined for young minds.
  • Fast City: Children may solely depend on running and jumping to get across town, but that’s only practice for what’s in store in the big city. New York is characterized by its fast-paced lifestyle, predicated by the many modes of transportation that city dwellers use, be it subways, taxis, scooters, or bicycles.
  • Rainbow City: Traveling throughout the five boroughs is like a mini-tour around the world. New York takes pride in its tolerant environment for people from many backgrounds.
  • Green City:Learn how nature and New York City coexist with each other! Cities may be manmade, but nevertheless the city residents’ survival still depends on drinkable water and breathable air.
