In Jonathan Maberry’s Rot & Ruin, zombies are so much more than a chant of BRAAAAAINNNSSS! mindlessly out to attack the unturned. Living in a post-apocalyptic world after a devastating zombie outbreak, Benny Imura has to find a job before he turns 15, or else find his rations cut in half. After searching around with no luck, he turns to his half-brother, Tom, a bounty hunter whose mysterious vocation holds more secrets than Gretchen Wieners’ hair. Benny and his friends thinks zombie killing is cool, but Tom knows otherwise–and Benny has a lot to learn before he can really join the “family business”. While Rot & Ruin has plenty of action, thrills, and a touch of romance, the best parts are the quiet moments between the characters–the emerging bond between Tom and Benny as brothers and colleagues (if not yet equals), and the heartbreaking realization that every zombie was once a human.
