Host a Children's Book Week Party in your classroom, library, bookstore or home. Here are just a few ideas to make the event fun!
Preparation
Serve refreshments featured in favorite books. (See listing below for ideas.)
Dress as favorite book characters.
Display favorite books around the room.
Decorate room with posters and displays featuring favorite books.
Decorate room to look like a place in a favorite book.
Activities
Present awards for Poster Contest.
Discuss favorite books.
Discuss what might happen next in the book currently being read aloud in class.
Play In What Book? A Classroom Battle of the Books.
Present Favorite Book Awards.
Using a Story Starter, have students create a chain story during the party. Go around the room with each student adding a sentence or two to the story. (This is fun to do aloud.)

Refreshments
Below are some ideas for some party refreshments from favorite books. You should also take suggestions from your students, and find ideas from your own favorite children's books.
Each student should provide one item. Remember to assign some students to bring the paper goods -- plates, cups, forks, etc. Also be sure there will be enough food and drink items to satisfy everyone. Not everyone likes green eggs & ham, you know!

- Hot Chocolate & Nougats (The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg)
- Jarred Peaches (Holes by Louis Sachar)
- Everlasting Gobstopper (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl)
- Cookies (If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff)
- Stone Soup (Stone Soup by Jon J. Muth)
- Food and drink items based on book titles:
- The Princess and the Peas & Carrots
- Peter Pancakes
- Freckle Juice
- Swiss Cheese Family Robinson
- I Am the Cheese Blintzes
- Applecrispin: The Cross of Lead
You can use any recipe for the above items. Just use little signs to label each dish for the party. Try to think of some of your own. It's fine (and fun) to be a little silly.
