Art, Artists, and the Worlds They Create

This Showcase features books that have art or artists (including photographs and photographers) as the main subject.  Learn more about the interesting lives and exciting work of artists and photographers and the imaginative worlds they create. 

Please browse the titles below and click on those that interest you to see cover art and a full book description. Some of the titles may also include examples of interior art that offer a clearer representation of the actual book. The titles included in the Showcase are selected by their publishers who provide the art and descriptive information.

These books are available at your local bookstore, which we urge you to patronize. Your local bookseller can supply these titles and offer professional, informed help in selecting other good books for children.  Check the American Booksellers Association's directory of member bookstores for a bookseller near you.

Ansel Adams: America's Photographer , written by Beverly Gherman, illustrated with black and white photographs. Ages: 9-12.  A biography celebrating the photographer's 100th birthday.  (Little, Brown and Co. Children's Publishing)

Art Attack: A Brief Cultural History of the Avant-Garde , written by Marc Aronson. Ages: 12 and up. This intriguing introduction to modern art examines the avant-garde, the visionaries who took the greatest risks, and the times in which they lived.  (Clarion Books)

Art Dog, written and illustrated by Thatcher Hurd.  Ages: 2-5.  Art Dog, a canine avenger, gives art thief Bad Mutt his comeuppance after a wild chase through the streets of Dogopolis.  (HarperCollins Children's Books)

Baby Loves, written by Metropolitan Museum of Art, works by Mary Cassatt.  Ages: all.  Baby's first milestones, gloriously paired with works by Mary Cassatt. (Atheneum Books for Young Readers)

A Bird or Two , written and illustrated by Bijou Le Tord.  Ages: All.  "This beautiful creation allows children to experience two gifted artists-Matisse and Le Tord." —School Library Journal

The Class Artist , written and illustrated in full color by G. Brian Karas. Ages: 5 and up.  The creative process—elementary school style! Here is a rib-tickling, recognizable tribute to what G. Brian Karas (an artist in a class by himself) does best.  (Greenwillow Books)

Down a Sunny Dirt Road , written and illustrated by Stan & Jan Berenstain.  Ages: 12 up.  This enormously readable account tells of the early years before Stan and Jan Berenstain met, their courtship (briefly interrupted by World War II), married life, and their first fateful meeting with Theodor Seuss Geisel, the editor-in-chief and president of Beginner Books.  (Random House Children's Books)

The First Starry Night , written and illustrated by Joan Shaddox Isom.  Ages: 6-12. Young Jacques befriends the troubled and enigmatic Vincent van Gogh and learns how to see beauty in all things.  (Charlesbridge)

The Genius of Leonardo , written by Guido Visconti, illustrated by Bimba Landmann.  Ages: 8-10 (read alone); 5-10 (read together). "This hauntingly illustrated biography of LeonardO da Vinci brings the artist, inventor, teacher, writer and defender of freedom to life for readers of all ages." (Barefoot Books)

Hokusai: The Man Who Painted a Mountain , written and illustrated by Deborah Kogan Ray. Ages: 7 up.  A tribute to an artist unafraid to break with tradition.  (Farrar, Straus and Giroux)

Micawber, written by John Lithgow, illustrated by C.F. Payne.  Ages 5-8. The beloved actor and New York Times best-selling author introduces a squirrel with a vision.  (Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers)

Michelangelo , written and illustrated in full color by Diane Stanley.  Ages: 7 and up. The biography of an artist who towered above the late Renaissance and whose brilliance in architecture, painting, and sculpture amazes us to this day. (HarperCollins Children's Books)

Museum ABC, written by The Metropolitan Museum of Art with illustrations.  Ages: all.  A visually appealing and culturally rich new alphabet book. Museum ABC is a unique and colorful picure book that uses the alphabet to introduce children to more than one hundred works of art.  A full spread is  devoted to each letter of the alphabet and four pictures of the object represented. The Naked Lady , written and illustrated by Ian Wallace.  Ages: 5-8.  A striking picture book about the redemptive power of art, and about growing up. (Roaring Brook Press)

No One Saw...Ordinary Things Through The Eyes Of An Artist , written by Bob Raczka, with full-color reproductions of famous artwork. Ages: 5-7. "The singularity of artistic vision is celebrated in this gentle text."—School Library Journal. (Millbrook Press)

Painting the Wind , written by Patricia & Emily MacLachlan, illustrated by Katy Schneider. Ages: 4-8. Coming in April 2003 from Patricia MacLachlan, the beloved author of All the Places to Love, and her daughter, Emily, illustrated by accomplished artist Katy Schneider.  (Joanna Cotler Books)

Pink Paper Swans , written by Virginia Kroll, illustrated by Nancy L. Clouse. Ages: 5 to 10. Featuring full-color, cut-paper collages, this book introduces young readers to other cultures, and to the value of friendships between young and old. (Eerdmans Books for Young Readers)

Talking with Artists , written by Pat Cummings. Ages: 9 and up.  Personal stories and practical advice from thirteen popular and unique artists who share a great passion for communicating with the world through illustration. (Clarion Books)

Vincent Van Gogh: Portrait of the Artist , written by Jan Greenberg and Sandra Jordan.  Ages: 12 up. Vincent van Gogh—one of the 19th century's most brilliant artists—will forever be remembered as the Dutchman who cut off his ear. But this incident only underscores the passion that consumed him—a passion that, when he took up painting at age 27, infused his work.  (Delacorte Press)

Visiting Langston , written by Willie Perdomo, illustrated by Bryan Collier. Ages: 4-8. A picture book introduction to the legendary American writer, Langston Hughes. (Henry Holt and Company)
