CBC Showcase: Learning about Families

This skillful tale unites Korean and American folk traditions, bringing together past and present in a celebration of Halloween as a boy finds a link to his grandfather, behind the mask.

Behind the Mask

written and illustrated by Yangsook Choi

Kimin has only a few memories of his deceased grandfather. Most are pleasant, but he vividly remembers the one time he found his grandfather late at night, bending over a chest—and when his grandfather looked up, he appeared different—terrifying. Kimin was scared and never wanted to be alone with his grandfather after that—and then his grandfather passed away. When Kimin's mother suggests that he look through his grandfather's belongings for a Halloween costume, Kimin is apprehensive, but when he finds the courage to look through the box, he learns that his grandfather was a Korean mask dancer—and that it was a mask he was wearing that night. Kimin dresses in the mask and robe for Halloween, and later finds a note from his grandfather and realizes that the masks had always been intended especially for him.
