How Sholom Aleichem Became a Writer

by Erica Silverman, illustrated by Mordicai Gerstein

Adults may be familiar with the works of Sholom Aleichem, one of the most prominent figures in Yiddish literature, and this book brings his story to a new generation of readers for the first time. Ms. Silverman was inspired to learn more about Sholom Aleichem's life after attending a Broadway production of Fiddler on the Roof as a child. rtist Mordicai Gerstein has said of this project, "I was delighted at the opportunity to visually recreate a shtetl—the world not only of Sholom Aleichem, but of my grandparents as well—and put it between the covers of a book." Aspiring young writers will be encouraged by the story of a young boy who never abandoned his dreams, even in the midst of tragedy.
