CBC Showcase: Spanish-Language Books and Hispanic Heritage
Light-hearted and humorous, treats of the larger, timely issue that native-speaking people sometimes underestimate the talents, dignity, and humor of newcomers, often with preposterous results.
by Josephine Nobisso, illustrated by Dasha Ziborova
In the Bronx of the 1950's, a teacher calls upon foreign-speaking students to relate in English, of coursesomething about homelands that include China, Puerto Rico and Italy. Josephine, a precocious Italian girl from an educated family can speak enough English to get herself into linguistic trouble. Hilarious mayhem breaks loose when the teacher, who thinks she is from a farm, gives her "vocabulary prompts" that have Josephine calling upon words from a picture book of animals. When the teacher provides enough vocabulary, the girl can tell her coherent, if uproarious, tale that establishes a bond of mutual admiration.
