CBC Showcase: Fiction on the Edge
In this powerful drama about self-acceptance, Kit Webster fears openly being himself, which prevents him from finding what he wants most.
by Kathe Koja
Kathe Koja writes in her gripping play-within-the-novel (also entitled Talk), "Fear's the real barbed wire, fear's what holds us in, fences us from our desires, from what we know belongs to us." The inability to confront one's internal doubts, to break out of a self-imposed state of exile and accept the truth, is more difficult to conquer than any physical barrier or cage. Kit wants to be honest with himself, to be open about his homosexuality, but he needs a venue in which to do so-he unsuspectingly finds it in the leading role in the play Talk.
