Over Rainbows and Down Rabbit Holes: The Art of Children's Books
March 15 - June 15, 2008
Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Santa Barbara, CA
This magical presentation features approximately 70 works of art created specifically for children's books. These original works, seen as independent creations while connecting with their literary context, inspire the imagination and celebrate the creativity of making picture books for readers of all ages. The exhibition is drawn from the outstanding collection of picture book art assembled by Zora and Les Charles and is organized by SBMA in collaboration with The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, Amherst, Massachusetts, the first full-scale museum in this country devoted to national and international picture book art. Charlie Price has worked in psychiatric hospitals and schools for at-risk children for many years. Now he is an executive coach who writes psychological thrillers for teens. Publishers Weekly called Lizard People "subversive." Moderated by Deborah Brodie.

Writing Your First Novel Conference

Workshop: Books and Reading Strategies for English-language Learners in Grades K-8

Center for the Study of Books in Spanish for Children and Adolescents; California State University San Marcos
This workshop will focus on the language and culture of English-language learners through the selection of appropriate multicultural literature and will use quality multicultural literature to teach reading strategies and foster literacy development. Topics and activities include: Thematic units, Preview/Review, DRTA (Directed Reading Thinking Activity), QAR (Question-Answer Relationships), Reciprocal Questioning, Reader's Theater, Choral Reading, Visualization and Responding through the Arts. Methods for accelerating vocabulary development and motivating readers also will be demonstrated. (Three-day workshop to be conducted in English. $115.)

Plotting the Novel Conference

This workshop will offer practical strategies for plotting a middle-grade or young-adult novel, while exploring the potential for discovery in drafting and revision. A combination of mini lectures, discussion, and exercises will give writers the tools to plot their novels. Work sessions and group feedback will give writers a detailed plan to take home and use as they draft or revise their manuscripts.
