CBC Interns

The Children's Book Council, Inc. (CBC), the national nonprofit trade association of children's book publishers, is seeking unpaid Interns. Candidates must possess an interest in children's books, excellent organizational skills, and be proficient with a PC, including Word and Excel.
The duties are 50/50 Library and Awards & Prizes Online. Library duties include scanning, sorting, labeling, and shelving of incoming books; re-shelving books after use by library users; organizing and boxing books for donation; and other clerical duties. Awards & Prizes Online duties include database management; online and phone research; and other clerical duties. There will be other special projects on an as needed basis. The internship requires a minimum of one day a week for two months. Multiple internships are available and can begin at any time.
The CBC library houses approximately 10,000 titles, rotating annually and showcasing the previous two years of published books, as well as a large historical collection of major children's book award winners. The Awards & Prizes Online Database features over 300 awards and prizes in children’s literature, both national and international. This is a unique opportunity to learn about the history of children's book publishing, as well as current children's book publishing trends.

CLARION BOOKS
Editorial/Design Intern
(Editorial; Art, Design, and Production)

The intern will have the opportunity to observe and participate in all aspects of children's books publishing from manuscript stage to finished books and will work with the editorial, design, and (occasionally) marketing departments. Duties include clerical work such as maintaining the archival library and editorial files, logging submissions, and some photocopying. In addition, the intern will have the opportunity to correspond with authors and illustrators, sit in on editorial meetings, screen art and manuscript submissions, and write reader reports.
When possible, the intern will be able to sit in on editorial meetings and picture book meetings where illustrators are matched to manuscripts already under contract. The intern will also attend regular meetings with other members of the art and editorial staffs that will contribute to the skills needed for the internship.
The best form of instruction will come from on-the-job training while working with members from each of the individual departments. Clarion's diverse staff members will all come into contact with the intern and help and encourage him/her in responsibilities specific to each project. The intern will be directly supervised by Lia Norton, the Editorial/Administrative Assistant for Clarion.
The intern should have some previous office experience and a strong interest in books for young people and the publishing industry in general. Since this is an unpaid position, the intern is required to receive academic credit for her/his work. Ideally, the intern would work 10-15 hours per week; however, the hours and some other details of the position are flexible in order to meet individual program requirements for credit.

FARRAR, STRAUS AND GIROUX
Farrar, Straus and Giroux, located in New York City, offers year-round internship opportunities for students, non-students, and foreigners. Duration of internships vary in length from one to three months. Since the internship is unpaid, work hours and days are flexible and chosen by the intern. The intern coordinator will attempt to create a work schedule that reflects both the intern's interests and the various departments' needs. In this way, the intern gets a varied experience and broad overview of the publishing business. Internship inquires are welcome at all times during the year.
