Candlewick Press Announces New Imprint
March 10, 2011

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ANNOUNCING NOSY CROW, AN IMPRINT OF CANDLEWICK PRESS
Somerville, MA / London ( March 10, 2011 ) – Candlewick Press today announced a new imprint: Nosy Crow, an imprint of Candlewick Press. In a new Candlewick partnership with independent UK-based publisher Nosy Crow, Candlewick will co-publish a majority of Nosy Crow's full-color and illustrated titles in the US and Canada. Nosy Crow, an imprint of Candlewick Press, launches with ten children’s titles in fall 2011.
Among those books featured on the imprint’s launch list are Pip and Posy: The Little Puddle and Pip and Posy: The Super Scooter, the first titles in a winning new series about the everyday dramas of toddler life from award-winning illustrator Axel Scheffler. Scheffler, whose multi-million-copy seller and modern classic The Gruffalo inspired an Oscar-nominated short film, says “I’ve illustrated many picture books for older children, but it was a great new challenge to work on a series of simple books that really spoke to very young children and reflected their lives – I have a three-year-old myself. I very much enjoy working with Nosy Crow: what they are doing is brave and exciting and very child-focused. And, of course, I’ve known and worked with Nosy Crow’s managing director, Kate Wilson, for over twenty years.” At Candlewick, Joan Powers will serve as US editor of the Nosy Crow imprint.
Says Karen Lotz, president and publisher of Candlewick Press, "Kate Wilson's exceptional depth of experience in global children's publishing and her innovative vision for our industry's future both shine through the launch of Nosy Crow. We at Candlewick are thrilled to be able to offer these fantastic books for young children to the US and Canadian audiences through our joint imprint."
Says Kate Wilson, managing director and founder of Nosy Crow, “Choosing a US partner is a huge step for our fledgling company, but the match between Nosy Crow and Candlewick on illustrated publishing felt right from the start of our discussions. Though our lists are complementary, we share the culture and liberties of independent publishers, and we share our exclusive focus on – and passion for – creating great things for children to read. As someone who began their career selling rights in UK books to US publishers, I’ve known and respected Karen for many years, so I have watched Candlewick grow and prosper with huge admiration. We’re very proud to be associated with Candlewick.”
