#1 New York Times Bestselling Author Scott Westerfeld to Publish a New YA Novel with Pulse

NEW YORK – Pulse, an imprint of Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing, has announced today that Afterworlds, a young adult novel written by Scott Westerfeld, will be published on September 23, 2014. Scott Westerfeld is the New York Times bestselling author of both the Uglies and Leviathan series. Afterworlds will be supported by a major marketing campaign and a national author tour.

In Westerfeld’s novel, a young writer, Darcy Patel, arrives in New York City with a major contract to write her teen debut. She’s taken in by other seasoned and fledgling writers to help her navigate the world of publishing and writing. Told in alternating chapters is Darcy’s actual novel, also called Afterworlds, a suspenseful thriller about a teen who slips into the afterworld to survive a terrorist attack. The afterworld is a place between the living and dead, where Darcy’s protagonist takes on the responsibility of guiding souls and unsettled ghosts.

Bethany Buck, Vice President, Publisher of Pulse says “I am absolutely thrilled to be publishing Scott’s new novel. It’s a passionate and layered work of storytelling that celebrates the craft of writing and publishing in a fun and exciting way.”

Scott Westerfeld adds, “Readers of YA are also lively and energetic producers – of fanfic, of original work, of reviews and blogs and manifestos. Afterworlds is an homage to all those who write to make themselves better readers, or the other way around.”

Scott Westerfeld is the author of the Leviathan series, the first book of which was the winner of the 2010 Locus Award for Best Young Adult Fiction. His other novels include The Leviathan series, The Uglies series (which has over 4 million books in print and has been translated into 28 languages), The Last Days, Peeps, So Yesterday, and the Midnighters trilogy. Bethany Buck acquired North American, Audio, and Ebook rights for Afterworlds in a deal with Jill Grinberg at Jill Grinberg Literary Management.
